One of the most unique opportunities I had in my BFA was the ability to work on an a Vandercook press. Capitalizing on this, I built a self-directed independent study with Peter Bergman. Having been influenced by the short stories and poems of Richard Brautigan, I chose to pick a number of short stories and poems from his canon for this piece. I picked the poems and stories, typeset them electronically, and then carefully plotted out a schedule for the entire semester to make sure that I was able to print/bind an edition of 25. I borrowed two cases of ATF Garamond 459 (chosen for it’s usage in the time of Brautigan), and then cycled working from one case as I put away the previous weeks work into the other. I got into a good rhythm and eventually finished printing all of the pages as well as the covers. Everything for this project was printed on the press below. I hand set all of the type (both metal and wood) and used a plate from Boxcar in New York, for the photographic imagery. I then cut them down and sewed them together using saddle stitch.
